Tinnitus Treatments
Tinnitus refers to the sound or noise inside one’s ears. This sound is usually described as buzzing or ringing sound. A person may experience this from time to time or he suffers from the sound continuously. There is a wide range of these noises that a patient can experience.
There are two general types of tinnitus. The first one is subjective tinnitus and the other one is objective tinnitus. When a person suffers from subjective tinnitus, the patient can hear inside his ears the buzzing sound. This type is more common than the objective type. On the other hand, the objective type of tinnitus the person and the people around him can also hear sound, the buzzing sound, inside his ears.Cases of tinnitus that are considered severe can be very disturbing. This may cause sleepless nights or the person might not be able to concentrate in whatever he is doing.
There are many treatments for these types of tinnitus. You must bear in mind that these treatments have varying degrees of reliability according to statistical analyses.
For the subjective type of tinnitus, one can resort to drugs and nutrients. This includes Lidocaine, a drug that will be injected into the inner ear. This particular is known to suppress the sound for more or less 20 minutes. Other drugs that can be taken are Tricyclics (nortriptyline, amitriptyline) and Benzodiazepines (clonazepam, lorazepam). These drugs must be taken in small doses.
The patient must also avoid intake of salt, nicotine, and caffeine. Also, consumption of alcohol must be avoided. Studies have shown that alcohol intake contributes in the decrease and increase of the severity of the tinnitus.
Acamprosate, Etidrone (or sodium fluoride), zinc supplementation, carbamazepine, sertraline, melatonin, lignocaine (or anticonvulsants), and vitamin combinations can be considered in addressing subjective tinnitus.
Electrical stimulation can be also used for tinnitus treatment. This includes transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, transcranial magnetic stimulation (or transcranial direct current stimulation), and direct stimulation of auditory cortex using implanted electrodes.
Surgery, external sound, and psychological therapy are also other means of treating subjective tinnitus.
In the case of objective tinnitus, there is a relatively fewer options or choices of treatment compared to the choices in subjective tinnitus treatment.
The treatments include shielding of cochlea through the use of Teflon implant, clearing of ear canal, use of propranolol and clonazapam, use of neurotransmitter, use of botulinum toxin, and the use of gamma knife radiosurgery.
The clearing of ear canal is done when there is earwax plug. On the other hand, propanolol and clonazepam is used for arterial anatomic variation.
The treatments mentioned above might seem to be too many but again, the choice of a particular treatment will have to depend on the type of tinnitus. Also, the level or degree has a contributing factor in the type of treatment that will be chosen.
To sum it all up, it is still best to do preventive measures in addressing tinnitus. Natural cures are the best ones since most of them will not give any negative side effects.
